As my laptop hard disk started failing recently I wanted to upgrade it to new one. My laptop is two year old Sony VAIO. After I received the new hard I removed my old hard and fixed new one then used recovery disks to install the OS.

However after the initial setup when booting for the first time Windows gave the error “Windows Setup Cannot Configure Windows to Run on this Computers Hardware”. I couldn’t figure out the issue so I used Windows Backup to create exact clone of my previous hard disk together with rescue disk and tried to restore it. Everything works fine but..  I found that Windows Updates are not working properly.  It’s giving the error “Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running” It’s just one issue but I realized that there are other services, which are not working, for ex: Windows Defender, Crypto Service etc… I even tried stopping Windows update service and deleting catroot folders and restarting, but no luck. After spending more than two days I found this driver which is related to “Intel Rapid Storage Technology” and due to recent hard drives slightly different from old ones, we need to update this driver. All setup instructions are clearly defined in “Readme.txt” once you extract it. (or here “http://downloadmirror.intel.com/20110/eng/Readme.txt”)

Some of the errors I saw in the event viewer due to this.

The Windows Search service terminated with service-specific error %%-2147217025.
The Cryptographic Services service failed to initialize the Catalog Database. The ESENT error was: -583.
